What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an outdoor adventure using a hand held GPS (Global Positioning System) reciever and other techniques to find hidden treasures called Geocaches. Geocaches are hidden by other Geocachers and the coordinates are listed on the Geocaching website. There are several types of Geocaches, and most contain a logbook and small toys/trinkets for trading. The rules are simple; If you take something, you must leave something. After finding the Geocache and signing the log, return to the website to share your adventure.

Geocaching Events

A Geocaching event is a great way to meet other Geocachers in your area or sometimes from all over the world. Local events that are hosted by individual Geocachers, or group of Geocachers, are usually created to gather local Geocachers. Other events that are created to gather people from different regions, states, or countries are usually hosted by a large group or organization.

Geocaching Awards

Geocaching Awards is an event that has become popular among Geocachers around the world. This is a great way to motivate cachers to place unique and challenging caches, and the degree of creativity continues to grow every year. Geocaches are nominated and voted on by area Geocachers, and a ceremony event is held where everyone can get together to present awards to the winners.

Cache In Trash Out

Cache In Trash Out involves Geocachers helping to clean up parks and other cache friendly places across the world. Picking up trash you find along the trails, while Geocaching, is one way to participate in CITO. There are also events such as "International Cache In Trash Out Day" and "Highway Adopt A Spot Programs", where the focus is to make a greater impact on a specific location.

San Antonio Parks/Natural Areas

Geocaching is a wonderful way to be outside exploring San Antonio Parks and Natural Areas. Natural Areas are unique to the park system because their goal is to preserve the land in as close to a natural state as possible. Geocachers, like all visitors, are asked to help preserve the Natural Areas.
